PROTEUS consortium comes together in December
December brought the consortium together in Haugesund for two productive days joined by Circular Bio‑based Europe Joint Undertaking Project Officer Monica Padella and two external reviewers. The agenda balanced in‑depth technical discussions with time on site, including an inspection of the Hypomar harvesting vessel and a walkthrough of Alginor’s biorefinery facilities. The review focused on progress across the work plan and alignment on priorities for the next phase.
A location built for an integrated value chain
Haugesund is home to Alginor’s headquarters, with production facilities close to Norway’s kelp forests. The setting supports rapid transfer from harvest to processing and reflects the project’s ambition to integrate supply and biorefining within a transparent, traceable value chain.
On board with Hypomar Ocean 1
The inspection of Hypomar Ocean 1 offered detailed insights to the consortium. The vessel, delivered in May 2024 to Alginor’s subsidiary Hypomar, is a hybrid harvester designed for safer and more efficient operations with on‑board pre‑processing that stabilises Laminaria hyperborea for consistent quality. Hypomar Ocean 1 enables formaldehyde‑free processes and secures reliable, high‑quality feedstock for the biorefinery.
Clear next steps after hands‑on discussions
Face‑to‑face collaboration in December helped consolidate achievements to date and set priorities for scaling activities. Partners left Haugesund with a shared understanding of the next milestones and an unified focus on continued optimisation across harvesting, processing and downstream applications.
